I Made a 18th Century Petticoat and Applied Fast Start to Sewing - Easy Petticoat Tutorial

Hello friends, I'm back this weekend after dealing with some life things (oh pandemic life) and I am excited to bring you a new video. This week's video combines two parts of my life, adult learning/ motivation and sewing. Have you ever heard of a "fast start?" This is a productivity technique where you knock out a few quick wins to build your momentum and confidence to tackle a larger project. For sewing this is a great way to get back into sewing after a hiatus. How can you identify a quick win? Think of a one day make. something that you can finish in a day or two is a great quick win. I try not to get into a UFO for the first step because I always seems to uncover more than I expected when I come back to a existing project. My quick win right now is this petticoat. For this project I used: 2 yards of 44 inch wide cotton Sateen (is was already in my stash 3 yards of 1 1/2 inch wide cotton twill tape thread I did read through the American Duchess Guide to 18th Century Costuming while I was deciding how to do this project, but decided I would take some of the basic principles and do things a little in my own way. I got a similar product that I am happy with, but if this method isn't working for you I would recommend checking out some of our other costubers or the above book for another approach. I intend to wear this as my inner most petticoat as I experiment with more 18th century project in the next year. Because it will barely ever be seen, I am not going to beat myself up if the hem stitches were larger than normal. I also was able to make it completely reversible because any false rumps, split bums, or paniers will be on top of this layers and I did not need to level my hemp to accommodate them. Do you have a project you want to use as a fast start to knock some rust off of your skills? Tell me about it in the comments below or tag me on Instagram as @maridith.smith . I hope you have a great week and stay safe out there!
