The scattered remains of Fatimid fortifications historically formed a wall protecting Mahdia from attacks from the sea. Because of its location on a peninsula and the city surrounded by the sea on three sides, Mahdia was ideally suited for a Fatimid seat, which could be easily defended. To protect the city from the fourth side, where the promontory meets the mainland, massive 10-meter-high walls were built, along with the massive fortified gate of Skifa el Kahla. The rest of the promontory was surrounded by slightly lower walls, and a massive Kasbah was built.
