Honeybee Annual Daylight Autonomy - Don't Trust The Average

Hello, my friends and plumroasters! Annual Daylight Script Download here: https://payhip.com/b/QzZl7 In this video, I revisit the Honeybee Annual Daylight Study in Grasshopper and Radiance to measure daylight autonomy over a full year — but with a twist. While most daylight studies focus on the average score, this can be misleading: some areas may be overlit while others remain dark, yet the average still looks “fine.” I’ll guide you through building a clean, simple script using Honeybee and Radiance, featuring a single room and a real weather file, while explaining modifier sets, sensor grids, and window ratios step-by-step. You’ll learn how to set up your daylight analysis correctly, avoid common mistakes with periods vs. annual data, and understand what the daylight autonomy percentage actually means. But here’s where it gets interesting: instead of stopping at the average DA score, I’ll show you how to calculate the mean absolute deviation and standard deviation of daylight autonomy across your sensor grid. This lets you check how evenly your daylight is distributed, aiming for a mean deviation under 10% to ensure your design isn’t just “bright” but balanced and comfortable. I also want to give a warm shoutout to two new channel members, including Cities of the Future (thank you!), and invite you to join the membership if you'd like to support the channel. Alternatively, you can download the prepared script if you’re short on time. Whether you’re learning daylight simulation basics or refining your scripts to design smarter, not just brighter, this video will help you deepen your daylight analysis workflow in a practical, clear way.
