Heartless Crew & Bass Inject Crew | UK Garage | Y2K FM 90.6 (Pirate Radio London) | Sat 26 May 2001
Artwork by Take Me Back Pirate Radio Archives. The Heartless Crew made their return to Y2K FM 90.6 (Yours 2 Keep) after a brief stint on north London rival Freek FM 101.8. However, Freek FM was beginning to have difficulties staying on air due to raids by the authorities and so the HLC moved back to their spiritual home 90.6 for about one year before being signed by BBC Radio 1Xtra. Note some say that 1Xtra acted as an institution on behalf the government to help stamp out pirate radio although the artists who signed to them had no idea about this drive, the authorities released documents clearly explaining the aims and outcomes of the digital radio outlet. The HLC did release their first track into the UK commercial pop charts whilst on Y2K FM, with: "The Heartless Theme" aka Super Glue Riddim (EastWest label, 2002). Which brings us onto the Bass Inject Crew, who consisted of Papa Clippa, DJ Tempo, DJ Koolmak, MC Footsie and MC Spliffy Ranger. They featured on the 90.6FM dial since 1998 and at the dawn of Mission FM. Bass Inject were residents at big name events in Essex/East London headlining "Frisky" @Vivid & Elite Nightclub, Romford (formerly Hollywoods), also "Delirious" @The Venue, Ilford (formerly 5th Avenue Nightclub). The Bass Inject Crew had its origins in Jungle music back then it consisted of Tempo, Papa Clippa, Footsie, D Double E and Terror Danjah. However, Terror and D Double E broke away to from the infamous Reckless Crew, with the likes of Bruza (MC Chigga D), Hitman Hyper, MC Lethal (Triple Threat), MC Funsta, MC Mayhem DT, MC Skanker, MC Looneytik, DJ Scratcha "Dub Plate" Dan (Scratcha DVA), DJ Interlude, Lady Dyer and few other reputable heads. Then it was by no surprise when Footsie joined forces with his old time friend D Double E and DJ Tubby to form Braindead Entertainment which was the precursor for the Newham Generals. Interestingly, Footsie's style back then was attributed as being part of Mission FM style which was associated with MCs like MC Frost, MC Rodney B, MC Ebony Jae, MC Dangerous D, MC Vicious V and also MC Marvel, who all bared that Mission FM twang to their flow and lyrics. At that time Y2K FM was also celebrating 10 years of 90.6FM being on London's FM dial with a birthday bash @Aztec Lounge, Tottenham (formerly The Temple Nightclub / Club UN). The 90.6 dial had come along way over the decade from the times when it was firstly Pulse FM (Hardcore/Jungle pirate), Radio Active FM (Jungle pirate), Chicago FM (House & Garage pirate) and then Mission FM (UK Garage pirate). Y2K FM had changed its approach also dedicating days of the week to different styles of music, Manic Mondays were old school Jungle & new DNB, Thursdays were dedicated to R'n'B and Hip Hop. To those that remember Mission FM which was run by Swifty, Ricochet and Badger B (formerly one the founding members of Freek FM). At the turn of the Millennium, management split paths, Ricochet joined forces neighbouring station Raw FM 90.0 (based in north west London) taking the name Mission and joining to form Raw Mission FM 90.0 with Bionic Bossman. Meanwhile, Badger B kept ownership of 90.6FM dial calling it Y2K FM. Y2K FM managed to retain most of its top DJs and MCs, some members parting to neighbouring station Pure Magic 90.2 & to Deja Vu FM 92.3. Big up all the Y2K FM DJs & MCs Heartless Crew, Super Raggo Crew (DJ Sean E, DJ Mystro & MC Bossman), Bass Inject Crew (DJ Tempo, DJ Koolmak & MC Footsie), DJ Pioneer, DJ Tiny & MC Iron Head, RST & Evo, Mista Mee & Inspiration (The Outlaws), DJ/MC Marvel, Colin I & Lady Legs, DJ Decos, Partners In Vibes (DJ Smokey, DJ Steady, MC OD & MC Disco), Slaughter Mob (DJ Bandit & DJ Q-Nice, MCs Vicious V & Dangerous D), The Unusual Suspects (Double R, Mania, Leonardo & Sparks), DJ Hotsteppa, DJ Tag, DJ Wesley 2play, DJ Influence & MC Skanker, MC Whizzard (RIP) and others.
