ПОЧЕМУ АВТОР «УСТНОГО СЧЁТА» УМЕР В БЕРЛИНЕ В ФЕВРАЛЕ 45-ГО?

Dear friends, hello! Today we'll tell you a story that will make you take a fresh look at a painting familiar to every Soviet schoolchild since childhood. You probably remember it: a village classroom, a blackboard with a problem, barefoot peasant boys intently solving a mental arithmetic problem, and a gray-haired teacher by the window. The painting is called "Mental Arithmetic. In the S. A. Rachinsky Public School." It was published in arithmetic textbooks, hung in school hallways, and shown in art classes. Now tell me honestly—do you remember the name of the man who painted it? His name was Nikolai Petrovich Bogdanov-Belsky. Academician of the Imperial Academy of Arts. A student of Repin. Portrait painter of the Grand Dukes. A recipient of the Latvian Order of the Three Stars. And—the illegitimate son of a village farmhand, whose birth certificate had a dash in the "father" column. In this video, we walk with him through his entire life—from his barefoot childhood in the Smolensk village of Shitiki, through Repin's studio and the halls of the Academy, through the revolution and emigration to Riga, to his last day in a Berlin hospital in February 1945. We'll talk about the teacher who spotted the future academician in a peasant boy. We'll also talk about why his name was quietly shoved into the background in the USSR, while his painting remained in textbooks. And we'll also discuss the location of his grave today. 📖 ABOUT SOURCES AND METHODS This story is based on an analysis of multiple sources—art history monographs, museum collection catalogs, memoirs of contemporaries, publications in the Russian émigré press, and archival materials. We've carefully distinguished popular myths and legends from documented facts, and in the video itself, we'll honestly address any discrepancies between the sources. Some of the dialogues and interior scenes in the text have been reconstructed based on historical documents, memoirs, letters, and recollections of contemporaries. This is an artistic reconstruction, helping to convey the atmosphere of the era, rather than a verbatim transcript. Where precise information is lacking, we have stated this honestly. We invite you not only to watch the video, but also to reflect with us. Perhaps you have your own memories of this film from your school years? Perhaps one of your relatives studied from the very textbooks in which it was published?
