Jacinto is a Brazilian municipality in the state of Minas Gerais. History The municipality was created by State Decree-Law No. 1058, of December 31, 1943, separated from Almenara. In the territorial division dated 1983, the municipality consists of 3 districts: Jacinto, Avaí do Jacinto, and Jaguarão. Jacinto belongs to the Immediate Geographic Region of Almenara and the Intermediate Geographic Region of Teófilo Otoni. It is located in the microregion of Almenara and the mesoregion of Jequitinhonha. AUTHOR: Sinval Olegário de Almeida Ruas. (In Memoriam) HISTORY Research indicates that possibly at the end of the 19th century, a squatter named Jacinto resided on the banks of the stream now called JACINTO, hence the name of the stream. Consequently, the city that formed at the mouth of said stream also received the name CITY OF JACINTO. In addition to others, the following people resided in the vicinity of the current city before the settlement was formed: Hilário Bispo de Souza, deceased in 1912, and owner of a farm on the left bank of the Jequitinhonha River; the Lúcio family, headed by the elder Cesário Lúcio, with his sons José Lúcio, Miguel Lúcio, and others, established on a farm acquired on the right bank of the river, in the location where the current city is situated, in 1913; Pedro Araújo (known as Pedro Feio), his wife Dona Maria, and their son Dely, in 1919; Belizário de Tal, with a farm on the left bank of the river; Horácio Soares da Cunha; Luiz de Deus; Reduzino Bispo dos Santos; Ladislau Alves de Souza; Sabino Antônio de Oliveira According to information from Mr. Dely Antunes de Araújo, a personal witness to the founding of the Arraial da Barra do Jacinto, the first house was built by his father, Pedro Araújo, known as Pedro Feio, at the end of 1919. He recounts that he was eight years old at the time, but his memory is quite clear to remember everything that happened then. In the year 2000, Dely is 89 years old. He remembers that his father, with his family, decided to go down the banks of the Jequitinhonha River, looking for a good place to settle.
