Special Delivery, Detroit River

While taking Detroit Yacht Club's Boat 1 downriver for a sea trial, I encountered the Wescott, Detroit's famous floating post office. The crew delivers mail and packages to freighters underway without the ships ever stopping or altering course. A brave letter carrier must climb a rope ladder from the bow of the Wescott to the deck of the ship. You can see deck hands raise and lower the bags of mail to and from the ship. The Detroit River is one of the busiest harbors in the country for national and international shipping. Being on the river is always fascinating because of encounters like this one. Strong currents, big ships, and incredible views.
