Hugelkultur - How I constructed this garden bed
My soil is very hard packed clay with lots of rocks mixed in so digging is very challenging. However I decided to give the Hugelkultur thing a try and I dug out a 4x20' section of my backyard, threw in a bunch of logs and sticks and other wood. Then some compost and also some pre-broken down wood from a large pile in my backyard. This basically had already turned to mostly dirt, great stuff! Then put the dirt back on top. This took me a total of 5 full days of work to complete. I spent probably 12-14 hours digging, then 10 more hours to put in the wood and compost and all that rotted away wood. Then another 8 hours to put the soil back on top. It really did take a lot of physical energy to complete. However I hear that you really do not need to irrigate at all anymore after installing it. The wood itself soaks up moisture and keeps it in the bed for you like a giant sponge. It also breaks down fairly quickly and adds nutrients and organic matter back in the soil. So overall it might be worth the huge amount of effort to install. We will see. I will keep you all updated over the next few months. 00:00 Introduction 01:10 Digging 03:14 Adding Wood 05:12 Composted Wood 08:48 Chicken Compost 09:00 Soil on Top 11:07 Watering 11:29 After 1 Week 14:24 Outro
