After much penance, a son was born to Rishi Mrikanda as a child, whom he named Markandeya. But looking at the child's symptoms, the astrologers said that the baby is short-lived and only 12 years old. When Markandeya's infancy had passed and he was able to speak and be understood, his father told him of his short life. He also gave the seed mantra of worship of Lord Shiva and said that only Lord Shiva can free you from the fear of death. Then the boy Markandeya sat in the Shiva temple and started Shiva sadhana. When the day of Markandeya's death came, his parents also sat down in the temple to worship Lord Shiva. When the hour of Markandeya's death came, the messengers of Yama came to fetch him. But due to the effect of the mantra, he did not dare to go to the child and returned from outside the temple. He went and told Yamaraja everything. At this, Yama himself came to fetch Markandeya. Seeing Yama's bloodshot eyes, terrifying appearance, riding on a buffalo and holding a rope in his hand, the boy Markandeya became frightened and embraced the Shivling crying. As soon as Markandeya embraced the Shiva Linga, Lord Shiva himself appeared and angrily said to Yama, “How did you even think of executing a devotee who is taking refuge in me? Yama said, “Lord, I want forgiveness. The Creator has entrusted me with the task of executing on the basis of actions, I have just come to fulfill my duty. Shiva said I have given the boon of immortality to this child. Hearing these words from the mouth of Shiva Shambhu, Yama bowed to him and asked for forgiveness and left.
