We are a couple in our 50s living in Rikubetsu, Hokkaido, the coldest town in Japan. Since purchasing our camper van "AKIVAN" in 2017, we surprisingly took our first "New Year's Eve camper camping trip" in our car. On New Year's Eve, we soothed our fatigue with a day trip to Odaito Onsen Seaside Hotel, then traveled to Odaito Roadside Station and toasted with a homemade meal and a seafood bowl topped with scallops, salmon roe, and sweet shrimp. Looking back on 2025, it was a year for which we are eternally grateful, having met so many people through our camper van. On New Year's Day, we watched the beautiful sunrise at Odaito Roadside Station and enjoyed our first hot spring soak at Nakashibetsu Hot Spring Inn. Finally, we drove around the Notsuke Peninsula and enjoyed homemade ozōni (rice cake soup) at the nature center. This two-day, one-night trip experienced the harshness of Hokkaido's winter, but even more so, the warm hot springs and human connections.
