ROY HAYNES (1925 – 2024) A towering figure in the world of jazz, Roy Haynes departed this earthly realm at the end of 2024. This Jazz Memorial will be doubly special as we honor his life and music on what would have been his 100thbirthday. Roy Haynes was an iconic American jazz drummer, widely recognized for his innovative style and unparalleled longevity in the music industry. Born on March 13, 1925, in Boston, Massachusetts, Haynes became one of the most influential drummers in jazz history. His career began in the 1940s, and he went on to work with some of the genre's greatest names, including Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and Thelonious Monk. Known for his unique sense of time, complex rhythms, and mastery of the ride cymbal, Haynes helped shape modern jazz drumming and earned him the nickname “Snap Crackle” for his snare drum sound. He led several of his own groups and recorded extensively as a bandleader, showcasing his remarkable ability to adapt and innovate across various jazz subgenres.
