Vital Signs - Temperature is a video lesson that will cover the definition of body temperature, the system of heat production and loss that provides the necessary balance for body temperature, as well as the mechanisms that define thermoregulation, mechanisms controlled by the anterior/posterior hypothalamus. It will also cover the definition and physiology of hyperthermia/fever, and the respective mechanisms of body heat loss, controlled by the anterior hypothalamus, which are related to vasodilation and body perspiration, the types of fevers (persistent/sustained, intermittent, remittent, and relapsing). It will cover the definition and physiology of hypothermia, and the mechanisms related to body heat gain, controlled by the posterior hypothalamus and which are related to vasoconstriction and muscle contractions (shivering), as well as the reference values ​​that classify hypothermia as mild, moderate, and severe. This video lesson will also objectively present the different types of thermometers and the precautions for checking readings via different routes, whether oral/buccal, axillary, rectal, or auricular. Finally, it clarifies ANVISA Resolution No. 145/2017, which prohibits clinical assessment instruments such as mercury-based thermometers.
