Oberheim 8 Voice and OBX meet for the first time
A dear friend allowed me to use his Oberheim. 8 Voice. I am getting to know the machine....a little. This is my first improv using an arpeggiator for the EVS. Also first recording of the Moog Muse. Love that machine. The Oberheim 8-Voice is one of the most legendary synthesizers of the 1970s. Introduced in 1977, it combined eight independent SEM (Synthesizer Expander Modules) into one keyboard, giving it unmatched depth and richness. Its huge, organic sound made it a favorite of artists like Herbie Hancock, Joe Zawinul, and Prince, though only a few hundred were ever built. I was lucky enough to borrow this instrument — it’s not mine, but a real privilege to sit down with such a historic piece of music history. The 8-Voice has quite a steep learning curve, since every parameter must be adjusted across all modules, but that complexity is part of its charm. This video is just my first try, and I’m happy to share the experience of exploring such a rare and inspiring synth.
