As IEBC Threaten Cancelling Olkalou By election & 2027 Elections over Goonism: The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has warned that the upcoming Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election could be postponed or even cancelled if cases of violence, voter bribery and other electoral offences continue. IEBC Chairperson Erastus Ethekon issued the warning on Thursday, July 9, saying the commission would not allow an election to proceed in an environment that threatens the credibility and safety of the voting process. The by-election is scheduled for Thursday, July 16, but the commission says the situation on the ground has raised serious concerns. According to Ethekon, investigators have already been deployed to establish the truth behind several reported electoral offences. He explained that if the environment is found to be unsuitable for a free, fair and peaceful election, the commission will have no option but to postpone the exercise. If the situation fails to improve, the IEBC could cancel the by-election altogether. The commission is investigating allegations of widespread voter bribery, campaigns conducted outside the legally permitted hours, violent clashes between rival supporters and the suspected involvement of criminal gangs in the campaigns. Ethekon noted that while the constituency remains peaceful during the day, violence reportedly breaks out at night. He said rival political supporters have been engaging in confrontations, destroying campaign materials and creating insecurity. The IEBC also confirmed it is investigating the death of one person following an election-related confrontation on July 1. The commission described the incident as unfortunate and stressed that violence has no place in Kenya's democratic process. Meanwhile, Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro recently criticised the IEBC, accusing it of failing to act decisively against those behind electoral violence and other illegal activities during the Ol Kalou campaigns.
