Today I'm going to share with you my experience camping on Cerro Piltriquitrón, in El Bolsón, in Argentine Patagonia, in the dead of winter. For this adventure, I brought gear designed specifically for the cold. My tent was the Azteq Gobi, super lightweight, weighing only 1.5 kg, perfect for mountain trekking. For ground insulation, I used a combination of two thermal insulators: one made of EVA, the famous "eggshell" material, and the other inflatable. This combination makes all the difference, because there's no point having a good sleeping bag if the cold from the snow penetrates the ground. All the gear is in this spreadsheet: https://bit.ly/4j0jeCd Speaking of sleeping bags, I brought two Deuter models: the Exosphere and the Astro Pro 400, both with 0°C comfort and a -6°C temperature limit. I always check the weather forecast in the mountains, and depending on the temperature, I decide whether to take just one or both. For example: in Ushuaia, I had to sleep with both bags together. In El Chaltén, one was enough. The ideal sleeping bag for the Patagonian winter climate would be a more powerful sleeping bag, such as the Astro Pro 600 (comfort -4°C | limit -10°C) or the Astro Pro 800 (comfort -8°C | limit -15°C). Both are down, compact, and lightweight—perfect for those who want to brave cold nights without carrying too much weight. An important tip: women should always base their sleeping bag on comfort temperature, while men can consider the limit temperature. Never choose your sleeping bag based on its extreme temperature, as it doesn't guarantee a safe and comfortable night. Camping in places like Cerro Piltriquitrón in winter is challenging, but it's also a unique experience. Sleeping on the mountain, surrounded by Patagonian snow, in the middle of winter, is one of those experiences that stays with you forever.
