The castle's origins date to around 1331, during the late Kamakura period, and it served as the seat of the Ozu Domain through the Edo period. What makes Ozu Castle exceptional is its tower keep (天守): after the original was lost in the Meiji era, an extraordinary 25-year restoration project culminated in 2004 with the reconstruction of the four-story main tower using entirely traditional wooden construction methods — making it one of only a small number of castles in Japan to have achieved this. The tower's interior uses no nails or modern materials, faithfully reproducing the craftsmanship of the original. The castle overlooks the winding Hiji River and the rooftops of old Ozu town below, a city often compared to Kyoto for its preserved streetscapes and earned the nickname "Little Kyoto of Iyo" (伊予の小京都).
