Greenbelt Maryland Save As You Throw Program

Trash costs are rising, and communities are looking for practical ways to help residents save money while reducing waste. That’s exactly what The City of Greenbelt set out to do with its Save As You Throw Program. The pilot program, launched in January 2026, uses a two-part fee structure that lowers the base service fee and lets residents choose between variable or fixed landfill pricing, giving households more control over costs while encouraging waste reduction. How is it working? In this free webinar from the Maryland Recycling Network, see how the program is going and what Greenbelt has learned so far. We'll take a look at the early results, how the City built support with residents and City Council, what feedback they’ve received from both residents and staff, and how a SAYT-style program could be adapted for your own community. Greenbelt did it and so can you!
