Xi Jinping, general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, visited Drepung Monastery, Barkhor Street and Potala Palace square in Lhasa, capital city of Tibet Autonomous Region, to learn about the work on ethnic and religious affairs, the conservation of the ancient city, as well as the inheritance of and protection for Tibetan culture. While visiting Drepung Monastery, President Xi stressed that the country should respect people's religious beliefs, manage religious affairs in accordance with the law while following the principle of independence and self-management. He said Tibetan Buddhism should be guided in adapting to the socialist society and promoting the harmony among the religions, the society and the nation. As the largest monastery of the Gelug Sect of Tibetan Buddhism and the largest monastery in Tibet, Drepung Monastery is known as the "Three Major Monasteries" in Lhasa together with Ganden Monastery and Sera Monastery. In his visit to Barkhor Street, a circular ancient shopping street and a famous tourist attraction, President Xi chatted with store owners and learned about the local tourism development. President Xi spoke to local residents when he was inspecting Potala Palace square where the world cultural heritage Potala Palace and the Monument to the Peaceful Liberation of Tibet are located. "Our 56 ethnic groups are all members of the community of the Chinese nation.
