Every morning, the aroma of freshly baked bread wafting from the Salcedo prison awakens the town. Drawn by the freshness of the bread, residents and shopkeepers flock to the facility. The inmates, amidst blazing ovens, chopped wood, and sparks from welding, strive to transform their confinement into a second chance. Inside the Juana Núñez Military Fortress, the daily routine begins before dawn. While some inmates head to the bakery workshop, others divide their time among carpentry, blacksmithing, agriculture, the poultry farm, the barbershop, and vegetable gardens. In these spaces within the prison, time ceases to be measured solely in years of imprisonment and begins to translate into learning and discipline, preparing for life outside of prison. Currently, the facility houses 194 inmates: 116 convicted and 78 awaiting trial, including 15 women. Overcrowding necessitates tripling the available space.
