The Real Gem of Ladakh, A Lifetime of Wisdom, Experience, and Knowledge (part 2)

It was a profound honour and a rare privilege to have the opportunity to interview Venerable Thupstan Paldan, an eminent Buddhist monk, distinguished scholar, historian, educator, author, and artist whose lifelong contributions have played a pivotal role in preserving and promoting the history, culture, and educational heritage of Ladakh. At the age of thirteen, he was sent by his father to Tibet to pursue study Buddhist philosophy and studies. He subsequently continued his education in Sri Lanka, further broadening his intellectual and spiritual foundation. He also studied at Ladakh Buddhist Vihara, the first educational institution established for students from the Himalayan region through the visionary leadership of His Eminence 19th Kushok Bakula Rinpoche, with the support of India's first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. This institution became a landmark in the advancement of modern education for the people of Ladakh and the wider Himalayan region. In accordance with the guidance and instructions of His Eminence 19th Kushok Bakula Rinpoche, Venerable Thubstan Paldan devoted himself to the service of society through education, beginning his career as a teacher. He later joined the Ladakh Cultural Academy in Leh as a research scholar, where he dedicated decades to the systematic study, documentation, and preservation of Ladakh's rich historical and cultural legacy. Through meticulous research and unwavering commitment, he has authored numerous authoritative works that have become invaluable resources for understanding the region's history, traditions, and cultural identity. He is widely acknowledged as one of the pioneering historians and literary figures of modern Ladakh. Beyond his scholarly accomplishments, he is also an accomplished painter whose artistic works reflect both technical excellence and deep cultural sensitivity. Venerable Thupstan Paldan's lifelong dedication to education, historical scholarship, cultural preservation, and the promotion of Ladakhi heritage has left an enduring legacy that continues to inspire scholars, students, and the wider community. Even in his 85 year, he remains remarkably energetic, intellectually vibrant, and steadfast in his commitment to serving society with the same enthusiasm, humility, and sense of purpose that have characterized his life's work. I consider myself truly fortunate and deeply grateful to have had the opportunity to document and preserve a part of his extraordinary life journey through this interview.
