ESE 471 A General Formula for Prob Symbol Error in M ary PAM
This segment derives the probability of symbol error expression for pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) with arbitrary number of symbols M. I derive this for additive zero-mean Gaussian noise and equally likely symbols. I start with the M=8 case before generalizing for arbitrary M. Then I plot the symbol error and discuss the system design implications. For all of my 471 course materials, check out https://span.engineering.wustl.edu/es....
