Net zero healthcare: Does HTA have a role to play?

Healthcare systems globally have set ambitious net zero targets, but achieving them requires coordinated action across many parts of the healthcare ecosystem. As part of those efforts, should environmental impacts be taken into consideration when assessing the value of new health technologies? Grace Hampson is joined by Koonal Shah, Associate Director and Head of Science Policy at NICE, and Chris Sampson, Senior Principal Economist at OHE to ask whether environmental benefits (or harms) should also be incorporated into health technology assessments. They discuss: 🔹The carbon footprint of healthcare systems globally, and the vicious cycle of the climate-health crisis 🔹The role of HTA bodies in supporting environmental sustainability 🔹Important trade-offs between environmental impact and patient outcomes – and what NICE’s own research has found 🔹What HTA bodies are already doing in this space, and what’s next on the horizon. A Dose of Economics is Grace and the Office of Health Economics (OHE) team thinking out loud — debating the questions that matter most in healthcare policy, resource allocation, and health system decision-making, with the experts doing the work at the highest level. That's a wrap on Season 1! Thank you so much for watching, listening, and supporting the podcast this season.
