In this video, Dr. Arthur Vicentini, Head and Neck Surgeon, explains what laryngoscopy is for, who can undergo this examination, and what precautions are necessary. Check it out! 📅 Schedule your appointment: http://bit.ly/agende-consulta-drarthur CHECK OUT THE TEXT CONTENT: When studying the respiratory tract, it is important to perform a physical examination and some complementary laboratory tests. There are several tests that serve to visualize these structures, such as laryngoscopy, also known as nasofibrolaryngoscopy and nasofibroscopy. 00:48 What is laryngoscopy for? Through this examination, it is possible to evaluate the nasal cavity as a whole. Among the structures are: the turbinates, the entire larynx (nasopharynx, oropharynx, and hypopharynx), the vocal cords, and sometimes the upper part of the trachea, which is the channel through which air passes to reach the lungs. 01:29 Who can undergo a laryngoscopy? This exam can be performed on children, adults, and the elderly; however, it is more difficult in younger children due to their lack of cooperation. Often, children do not cooperate with the insertion of a small tube with a camera at the end that goes down the throat, allowing visualization of all these structures. 01:41 How is laryngoscopy performed? Laryngoscopy is performed under local anesthesia, using a small amount of anesthetic and lubricant. A small tube with a camera at the end is then inserted down the throat, allowing visualization of all these structures. After the exam, the patient can go home without any further complications. 01:49 Requirements for undergoing laryngoscopy The patient must not have any current respiratory infection, whether rhinitis, sinusitis, or something more complicated. Due to the ongoing pandemic, it's also important that you don't have respiratory symptoms that could put the professionals performing these exams at risk. If possible, it's best to wait until everything is alright and the exam can be done under more suitable conditions. In addition to the precautions mentioned above, it's important that the patient avoids eating in the two hours before the procedure because the procedure can cause discomfort and nausea, and if the stomach is full, the patient may vomit.
