Guillaume de Normandie Leaving Portsmouth | Britain's Newest Hybrid Ferry Captured by Drone
Welcome aboard Guillaume de Normandie, Brittany Ferries' newest flagship and one of the most advanced ferries ever to sail between the UK and France. In this cinematic drone film, we capture this magnificent vessel as she departs Portsmouth Harbour, showcasing her impressive size, elegant design and graceful departure from the skies. Launched into commercial service on 18 April 2025, Guillaume de Normandie represents the final chapter in Brittany Ferries' largest ever fleet renewal programme, which has seen five brand-new vessels join the fleet between 2020 and 2025. Built with the future in mind, she combines cutting-edge technology with French style, comfort and sustainability. This spectacular ship operates on Brittany Ferries' busiest route between Portsmouth and Caen (Ouistreham), providing passengers with a crossing that is as enjoyable as the destination itself. Every detail onboard has been inspired by the beautiful region of Normandy, celebrating its rich history, world-famous cuisine, art and culture. From the moment passengers step aboard, they're immersed in the atmosphere of northern France long before arriving across the Channel. One of the most fascinating features of Guillaume de Normandie is her innovative hybrid propulsion system. Powered primarily by cleaner Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), she significantly reduces emissions during her voyage. As she approaches Portsmouth Harbour and manoeuvres alongside the terminal, the ship switches to battery-electric power, allowing her to operate with virtually zero emissions and dramatically reduced noise levels. It's a major step towards cleaner, more sustainable ferry travel. In the near future, both Portsmouth International Port and Ouistreham will also provide shore power connections. This means the ship will be able to plug directly into the electrical grid while alongside, eliminating the need to run engines in port and allowing onboard batteries to recharge before the next crossing. Inside, Guillaume de Normandie offers an impressive level of comfort. The vessel features 220 modern cabins, including luxurious Commodore cabins, allergy-friendly accommodation and 21 pet-friendly cabins, making travel easier for every type of passenger. The ship can carry up to 1,300 passengers across 10 spacious decks, while the enlarged vehicle garage improves access for both cars and freight vehicles. Passengers can also enjoy a number of exciting new features, including the Café du Port, serving freshly baked French pastries each morning, the exclusive C Club Lounge, and the brand-new Couchette Plus lounge, offering an affordable and comfortable travel option, particularly for school groups and larger parties. From the air, Guillaume de Normandie is an incredible sight. Watching this 194-metre-long vessel leave Portsmouth Harbour with the historic naval city and the iconic Spinnaker Tower in the background provides a unique perspective that few people get to experience. The drone footage highlights not only her impressive scale but also the precision with which she navigates one of the UK's busiest ports. If you enjoy ships, maritime engineering, drone cinematography or simply appreciate seeing modern transport from a unique perspective, you're in the right place. If you enjoyed this video, please give it a thumbs up, subscribe to the channel and leave a comment below. I'd love to know if you've travelled on Guillaume de Normandie or if you're planning a crossing in the future. Thank you for watching. More drone flights featuring ferries, cruise ships, hovercraft and maritime action are coming soon.
