Lasting 120 days (that is, four months), the benefit, although granted in some specific cases also to men, is a great achievement for women who need to stop their work activities at such a sensitive and vulnerable time as the birth of a child. And — with the exception of self-employed contributors and rural workers who need to prove 10 months of contributions — it is not necessary to prove a minimum contribution period, that is, a minimum contribution time, to be entitled to the benefit. Social Security Protection Of the total 39,364,050 active benefits — social security and welfare — 22,440,306 are related to female insured individuals, representing a net value of over R$ 35 billion paid monthly to these women. This means that, in general terms, women represent the largest number of beneficiaries compared to men. And, when looking closely at the numbers, it is also possible to see that, at older ages (55 years and older), most beneficiaries are women. That is why it is important for them to join and thus guarantee social security protection and support during the most sensitive moments of life, such as when they no longer have the strength to work. Public Social Security policies offer differentiated rules for women. These rules were implemented with the aim of reducing gender inequality in the labor market. Among women's social security rights are the retirement age (reduced by three years for urban pensions and by five years for rural pensions and for people with disabilities), the contribution period (reduced by five years), maternity leave of 120 days, extendable for another 60 days, and a contribution rate of 5% for low-income individuals dedicated exclusively to domestic work (housewives). These actions are reflected in the profile of beneficiaries of the National Social Security Institute (INSS). In 2024, women received 56.4% of the total benefits paid by Social Security. As for welfare benefits, women are also the majority - representing 60% of the total amount in the same period.
