1991 Worlds Pairs FS (CBC) | Mishkutenok & Dmitriev Edge Brasseur & Eisler for Gold
Summary: The pairs competition at the 1991 World Championships in Munich produced one of the closest and most memorable contests of the event. The surprise performers were the young American champions Natasha Kuchiki and Todd Sand, who skated an energetic and determined free program to temporarily take the lead. Despite a few technical imperfections, including a hand-down on a throw triple loop, they impressed with their confidence and strong finish, earning marks largely in the mid-5s. Coached by John Nicks, the pair exceeded expectations and secured an unexpected bronze medal, signalling their emergence as future contenders on the international stage. The battle for gold came down to Natalia Mishkutenok (Наталья Мишкутёнок) and Artur Dmitriev (Артур Дмитриев) of the Soviet Union and the Canadian favourites Isabelle Brasseur and Lloyd Eisler. Mishkutenok and Dmitriev delivered a graceful and virtually flawless program featuring side-by-side triple toe loops, a beautiful triple twist, and seamless choreography that flowed effortlessly from one movement to the next. Their elegant style and exceptional presentation brought the Munich crowd to its feet and earned a string of 5.9 artistic marks, establishing a benchmark that appeared almost impossible to surpass. Brasseur and Eisler answered with a powerful, dynamic performance that electrified the arena and was widely regarded by the commentators as one of the finest skates of their careers. However, a costly error on a side-by-side double axel—where Eisler completed only a single axle—proved decisive in an event where there was little room for mistakes. Although the Canadians received outstanding presentation marks and ignited the crowd with their athleticism and confidence, they finished narrowly behind the Soviets. Mishkutenok and Dmitriev captured the world title, extending the Soviet Union's dominance of pairs skating to a seventh consecutive World Championship, while Brasseur and Eisler claimed silver and Kuchiki and Sand completed a surprise podium in bronze. --- VHS60fps (noisy tape), Canadian coverage (commentators: Chris Cuthbert, Barb Underhill, Paul Martini).
