Constantine the Great – In Hoc Signo Vinces (Epic Historical Song)
In 312 AD, Constantine marched toward Rome to confront Maxentius in a civil war for control of the Roman Empire. According to later Christian accounts, before the Battle of the Milvian Bridge he witnessed a radiant sign in the sky accompanied by the words In hoc signo vinces, meaning “In this sign you shall conquer.” That night, he reportedly dreamed that Christ instructed him to place the Chi Rho symbol on the shields of his soldiers before battle. After his victory, Constantine converted to Christianity and became the first Roman emperor to openly favor the Christian faith. In 313 AD, the Edict of Milan legalized Christian worship and brought an end to the persecutions that had lasted for centuries across the empire. His reign marked the beginning of Christianity’s rise within the Roman world and laid the foundations for the later transformation of the Roman Empire into a Christian empire. Lyrics: Rome divided, Rome in war, Four emperors, one vacant throne, The bridge of Milvian draws the line Between the known world and the unknown 312 AD, autumn closes in, The legions of Maxentius stand beyond the Tiber's rim, Outnumbered on the road from Gaul, no temple, no decree A sign burns in the midday sky above the cavalry At night a voice speaks in his sleep, Paint this sign upon your shields At dawn ten thousand soldiers march Bearing the sacred sign across the field The old gods watch from broken stones, A new age draws its sword The empire will not share a throne, One sign, one realm, one lord In hoc signo vinces In this sign you shall conquer Cross over the Milvian Bridge, March into the fire! One emperor, one Rome, one will The Tiber runs with empire's blood In hoc signo vinces, Let the new age rise! Maxentius breaks, the pontoon bridge collapses in the flood, He drowns beneath his fleeing men in the October mud, Constantine rides into the city, no persecution, no purge, He spares the senate, spares the faith and reads the coming surge The Edict of Milan will follow, Tolerance signed in 313, No more blood spilled for what you worship A wound across three centuries The old gods watch from broken stones, A new age draws its sword The empire will not share a throne, One sign, one realm, one lord In hoc signo vinces In this sign you shall conquer Cross over the Milvian Bridge, March into the fire! One emperor, one Rome, one will The Tiber runs with empire's blood In hoc signo vinces, Let the new age rise! He moved the throne from Rome to the east, Built a city of his name on seven hills, Constantinople — walls that would hold A thousand years against the storm Not a saint, not a demon, not a simple man He called the Council, burned his rivals, ruled with iron hand, But knelt before the cross and chose a different road And changed what the empire would become In hoc signo vinces In this sign you shall conquer Cross over the Milvian Bridge, March into the fire! One emperor, one Rome, one will The Tiber runs with empire's blood In hoc signo vinces In this sign you shall conquer In hoc signo Let the new age rise! His mother lit the path toward the faith, Constantine knelt and answered to the call The emperor who once marched under Roman gods Bowed his head to Christ and changed the world for all
