You never quite know who is going to walk through that door. Of course you hope that it'll all work out but by the end of the first day, we were in need of a small miracle. Tom Lewis [director of A&R at Decca Records] and I sat through a handful of performances from people who all had previous choral experience. But after half a day I'd only found two singers up to the required standard, we didn't have who I needed to make the choir that I wanted. I needed singers who were not only able to pick up the music quickly but who also had the personality and charisma to connect with an audience ... Some people had one element, perhaps they were great sight readers but couldn't connect with an audience. Others had a great look but no voice to back it up: I realised we were looking for very special people. Some of the singers were very nervous, and while I was sympathetic, I knew that they'd be facing much more daunting tasks as the choir progressed and I had to know they'd be able to cope and not crack under the pressure. By the end of the first day, I'd ONLY managed to assemble a quarter of my choir. With only two more days left to audition, I was nervous. This wasn't easy.
