You know, I’ve heard people over the years say that Dark Souls rewards a more reactive playstyle during combat. This got me thinking. What if we took that idea to the extreme and attempted to beat Dark Souls using only counter attacks? But what is a counter attack I hear you ask? Well, in this run they will take two forms, two and only two different ways I can damage enemies. The first is if I counter an enemies attack with a parry, I can riposte them with my weapon to do damage. Now, if you know anything about Dark Souls, you likely realise this isn’t going to carry us very far. Sure it’s great for humanoid enemies but only one boss in the entire game can be parried. Which leads me to the second way we can do damage. Thrust counter attacks. Weapons or attacks that do thrust type damage have a unique property where, if you hit an enemy at just the right point late into their attack animation, you get a bonus 20% damage. This mechanic is one of the main reasons I wanted to attempt this run because honestly there’s not too much information about it online. The ever helpful Fextralife wiki only has one very small page dedicated to this and honestly I wanted to try and find out more about how this works. There’s some very interesting stuff I learned during this run so get ready to hear more about thrust counter damage than you ever wanted to know. Edited by   / kodeedits   Want to see more?
