Genetic Causes of Parkinson's Disease | Understanding the LRRK2 Kinase Signalling Pathway
#Parkinson’s #disease is the fastest growing #neurological condition in the world and there is still no cure. Every week, 350 people are diagnosed with the condition in the UK. While the underlying cause for Parkinson’s disease is largely unknown, the discovery of rare genetic forms of the condition has provided crucial insight into cellular processes altered in Parkinson’s disease. Genetic changes in the gene known as Leucine rich repeat kinase 2 (LRRK2) is now recognised as one of the most common genetic causes for the disease. During her seminar, Dr Esther Sammler gives a brief overview of basic science discoveries that have led to a better understanding of the LRRK2 signalling pathway in health and disease. She also gives insights into her own translational Parkinson’s disease research programme which exploits the knowledge and reagents generated from the cutting-edge basic research at the MRC Protein Phosphorylation and Ubiquitylation Unit in Dundee and elsewhere.
