Since the emergence of life 3.8 billion years ago, living things on our planet remained simple organisms for billions of years… until the first complex life forms appeared. If you've ever heard of the Cambrian explosion, you know that this phenomenon is intriguing because of the significant diversification of life, even though before the Cambrian period, there were virtually no multicellular animals. And for a very long time, a mystery remained regarding the transition from the Precambrian microbial world to the appearance of Cambrian fauna. So what happened between the Precambrian and the Cambrian periods? 🔥 As a reminder, videos are published on SUNDAYS at 6:00 PM. ------------------------- 💥 The Fascinating Ediacaran Period: • It's 1946 in Ediacaran, a mountainous region in South Australia. There, well-preserved fossils are discovered buried in rock strata dating back hundreds of millions of years and belonging to no established geological period. This exploration holds many surprises. At first glance, the Ediacaran rocks seem unremarkable. Except… they tell us the story of the Earth in chronological order. Thanks to them, we have been able to answer questions that had remained unanswered until now, particularly those related to the origin of life on Earth. Analyses are then undertaken to pinpoint the exact period of the geological formations and determine the age of the newly discovered fossils. It should be noted that similar organisms had already been identified elsewhere before, but at the time, they were attributed, without much conviction, to Cambrian fauna. Stratigraphic and paleontological studies, as well as relative and radiometric dating, combined with examinations of the organisms discovered at Ediacaran, revealed that these organisms did not originate from the Cambrian period, but rather from an earlier one. The chemical composition, texture, and stratification of the rocks clearly indicated that the geological formations examined dated back to a period between 635 and 541 million years ago. What if we had just learned of the existence of an unknown period in our past that took place between the Precambrian and the Cambrian? This period is known today as the Ediacaran. A recently discovered era, yet it embodies the very emergence of life on Earth. The fossils discovered in Ediacaran, Australia, date back to the end of the Precambrian supereon, the first and longest period in Earth's history, spanning 4 billion years. It is, in fact, the least known, as very little direct evidence exists from this distant era. With the discovery of the Ediacaran, we have succeeded in uncovering the vestiges of the past and unraveling the mystery of the Precambrian. In 1957, while the study of fossils continued, a pivotal event occurred in Charnwood, England. Among the rare and protected species found in the geological formations of this forest, the fossil Charnia masoni was discovered.
