⚓ After leaving the Tua Pek Kong Temple in Nibong Tebal, we headed to Kai Hing Harbour. In the early 19th century, a Chinese family, the Xu family, established the "Kai Hing Sugar Factory" here, leasing large sugarcane plantations. The docks were bustling with merchant ships – hence the name "Kai Hing Harbour." Later, roads replaced the docks, and trains replaced shipping, causing the docks to gradually decline and transform into a fishing port. 🦐 The much-anticipated dock auction was a disappointment today! We asked a local uncle, who said that it was Chinese New Year, so all the workers were on holiday, and the fishing boats weren't out at sea, so the auction didn't take place. He said it usually starts at 10 am and is very lively. We could only imagine the auction scene – the auctioneer standing on the table calling out bids: "Twenty-four, twenty-three, twenty-two…" Once the bid was right, the fish were taken away. 🗺️ After reading the Nibong Tebal history on the bulletin board (Chinese arrival in 1790, British colonization in 1800, independence in 1957…), we moved on to Kota Kinabalu. Jiao Tou is located in the north of Perak, surrounded by rice paddies on three sides and the Strait of Malacca to the west—like a corner jutting into the sea, hence the name "Jiao Tou" (meaning "corner"). 🐟 Watching salted fish being dried in Jiao Tou! Long wooden planks are covered with small fish. The uncle says they only need to dry for half a day (until 1 pm), with larger ones drying a little longer. They're sold locally, not exported. The bamboo weaving tools are decades old, passed down from older generations; the younger generation doesn't make them anymore, the craft is lost. The workers are all Burmese migrant workers, earning between a thousand and three thousand Malaysian Ringgit. The fish being dried are all wild sea fish, caught immediately, making them cheaper than farmed fish—farmed fish are much more expensive, costing 20-30 Ringgit per kilogram. 🗣️ Teochew territory! The locals say their ancestors came from Chaoshan. When they heard we were from Chongqing, they chatted about sandworms and how to cook salted fish, feeling very close. They also told us that large fish can't be caught here; they're only found in the deep sea, so Jiao Tou only dries small ones. 🏯 Zhenjun Dadi Ancient Temple, over a hundred years old! Legend has it that Jiaotou was frequently plagued by fires and strange occurrences. A spirit medium proclaimed that rebuilding the temple and reversing its direction were necessary to dispel the evil influences. Hundreds of villagers and fishing households raised money to build the temple. Those who went to sea never knew if they would return; they needed a god, someone to carry on their lives. This place is more than just a temple; it is the fishermen's refuge and hope. ☕ Finally, arrive at the estuary, order a 2-yuan iced coffee, and enjoy the sea breeze. 160 years ago, Chaozhou people sailed from the mouth of the Han River in red-headed boats, looking at this sea and saying—"Let's stay here."
