Exklusiv: Fachgruppe Ölschaden THW im Einsatz bei Öl auf Sieg in Windeck am 06.07.26 + O-Ton

On July 4, 2026, at 2:17 p.m., the Windeck Volunteer Fire Department was alerted to an incident on Dahlhausener Straße in Imhausen. A heating oil tank on a trailer had sprung a leak, and approximately 2,000 liters of heating oil had already spilled onto the roadway and entered the storm drain system, flowing into the Irserbach stream and then into the Sieg River, into which the stream flows. After initial reconnaissance, the heating oil on the roadway was absorbed with absorbent material. Due to the significant amount of heating oil already in the storm drain and the Irserbach stream, additional emergency personnel were immediately called in. Oil booms were deployed on the Sieg River in the Eulenbruch area and at the Präsidentenbrücke bridge, and floating absorbent material was applied to contain further spread of the contamination. Water-based absorbent material and an additional oil boom were requested from neighboring fire departments. In parallel, specialist companies took over the cleaning of the roadway, the storm drains, and the Irserbach stream. Warnings were issued via the NINA warning app, and a swimming ban was declared. After all measures were completed, the scene was handed over to the Lower Water Authority of the Rhein-Sieg district. The German Red Cross (DRK) provided food and drinks throughout the entire operation. Participating in the operation were the fire department command, the Leuscheid fire brigade, the Herchen fire brigade's information and communications unit, the hygiene unit, the Eitorf fire brigade, the Ruppichteroth-Winterscheid fire brigade, the Hamm (Sieg) fire brigade, the police, and the DRK. On the 6th, the fire department and the public order office inspected the scene and determined that the oil deposits had settled on the riverbank and that the oil was only flowing away slowly due to the low flow rate. Saturated absorbent material was pumped out of the oil booms and new material was applied, and a fourth oil boom was deployed in Schladern. The oil spill response unit of the Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW) Essen deployed buoys and pumped out the oil, according to a press spokesperson. The Windeck Volunteer Fire Department, the German Red Cross (DRK) Windeck, the technical advisor, the second rescue unit of the THW Siegburg, and the THW Essen were all involved in the operation.
