■ The world is paying attention to Africa's transformation In July 2002, the African Union (AU) was officially launched. Fifty-four countries across the continent joined hands to build a unified, prosperous, and peaceful Africa. Furthermore, with the launch of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) in 2019, the continent is evolving into a vast community, forming a single market with a total population of 1.43 billion and a GDP of $3.4 trillion. Africa's median age is 19.7, and approximately 75% of the population is under 35. Projections suggest that by 2050, one-quarter of the world's population and one-third of the youth population will be African. This large youth population will be a key growth factor for Africa, and the world is focusing on young Africa. ■ Approaching Africa with Trust and Respect Korea provides official aid to many underdeveloped countries in Africa. Among them, Ethiopia, which dispatched ground troops during the Korean War, is a key partner for Korea. Among various support projects, those focused on improving the healthcare system and strengthening capacity are particularly effective. They provide medical services and infrastructure to ensure local residents have access to public health centers, while also providing medical staff training and medical equipment to university hospitals to enable high-difficulty surgeries. As a result of this collaboration, maternal and neonatal mortality rates have decreased and life expectancy has increased. Korea is also contributing to the growth of a young and healthy population in Africa. ■ Crossroads of Civilizations: The Korean Wave Spreads in Egypt Egypt is the cradle of ancient civilizations and a crossroads connecting Africa, Europe, and Asia. Cultures from each continent have spread to other continents through Egypt. Korean culture, and the Korean Wave, is currently popular in Egypt. Young Egyptians are showing a keen interest in diverse aspects of Korean culture, including K-dramas, K-pop, K-beauty, K-food, and K-literature. According to one survey, 90% of Egyptians have a favorable impression of Korea, the highest in the world. Egypt was also the first African country to establish a Korean language department at a university. Ain Shams University's Korean language department is a top-tier institution, admitting only the top 1% of students. Graduates from the department have gone on to work in African economics, diplomacy, and politics, serving as a valuable bridge for friendship and cooperation between Korea and Egypt, and between Korea and Africa. ■ Africa's Rising Middle Class Africa's abundant natural resources are both a blessing and a curse. Like other African countries, South Africa suffers from a severe wealth gap due to colonial rule and apartheid, which began with the exploitation of natural resources. To address this, the University of South Africa offers distance learning, offering affordable tuition and the ability to study anytime, anywhere. With an enrollment of approximately 370,000, the university produces approximately 40,000 graduates annually. The numerous highly skilled individuals produced through this program are driving Africa's development. Africa is growing into a massive production and consumption market for the global economy. ■ Korea must seize this opportunity with its strong reputation and relationships. The inaugural Korea-Africa Summit will be held in June of this year. At a time when the world is striving to connect with Africa, this is the first diplomatic event targeting all African countries. We need to approach Africa based on our shared emotional connection with poverty, our development experience transforming from an aid recipient to a donor, and our unprecedented appreciation for Korean culture.
