This Grandfather Shows Off a Magnificent Temple Buried by Mount Kelud's Lava Hidden in Gayam Village, Gurah District, Kediri Regency, lies an ancient relic that bears witness to an important part of Javanese history. This is the Tondowongso Site, a temple complex thought to date from the transitional period between the end of the Medang Kingdom (Ancient Mataram) in East Java and the beginning of the Kadiri Kingdom, around the 11th to 12th centuries AD. This site has attracted the attention of experts because of its architectural features that demonstrate a blend of Central and East Javanese styles. This makes Tondowongso one of the most significant examples of cultural and architectural development during the shift in power from Central Java to East Java. Discovered in late 2006, this ancient structure was previously buried under volcanic material from Mount Kelud to a depth of approximately one to three meters. This vast site area spans two hamlets: Tondowongso and Sumberpetung. Besides its historical significance, the local community also holds fascinating stories about the site's existence. According to the caretaker, Tondowongso is believed to have once been a place for the production of heirlooms.
