Overcoming The World 5 - Bro. Sam OYEYINKA
In this sermon, PSam takes us on a journey to understand the destructive power of ego, money, and the pursuit of personal pleasure. Rooted in biblical wisdom, PSam draws from Ephesians 2:1 to highlight how the fallen nature of humanity, inherited from Adam, pushes us towards unhealthy desires, ambitions, and attachments that lead us away from God. He shows us that there is a dangerous alliance between ego and money, causing us to pursue vanity projects and ambitions that cannot satisfy us, and which lead us into a cycle of idolatry. PSam teaches that to share glory is to lose glory, and instead of chasing the fleeting glory that the world offers, we should seek the good that comes from living in God’s will. Using scriptures such as Luke 4, Deuteronomy 6:16, and Exodus 17:1-7, PSam explains how testing the Lord by pursuing our desires instead of His can lead us down a path of murmuring and idolatry. When we desire something more than God’s will, that thing becomes an idol in our lives, and our murmuring is a sign that we’ve placed our wants above God’s purpose. Through the teachings in 1 Corinthians 6:9-10, Galatians 5:19-21, and Ephesians 5:5, PSam highlights the dangers of putting our own desires over God’s. Hedonism—the pursuit of pleasure for its own sake—causes us to seek enjoyment outside of God’s will, leading to spiritual emptiness. PSam reminds us that seeking happiness without God causes us to work through a cycle of hedonistic adaptation, where we continually spend more resources to chase fleeting pleasures, pushing God further out of our lives. In this sermon, PSam emphasizes that true faith is not about using God as a means to achieve our own desires but about submitting to His will entirely. As he reflects on James’ warning about hedonic prayers, PSam urges us to align our prayers and desires with God’s purpose, not our lusts. He teaches that the only way to break free from the idols of ego and personal pleasure is through a stronger and deeper love for God—a love that grows as we obey Him and move from duty to delight in His presence. Psalm 63 reminds us that only God’s love can expel the idols in our hearts and bring us lasting joy. PSam encourages us to cultivate this expulsive love through church fellowship, thanksgiving, meditation, and a deep, mindful connection with God’s Word. He warns that an absent-minded Christianity is fertile ground for idols, and calls us to constantly return to God, knowing that He alone has the strength to help us overcome our weaknesses. This sermon is a reminder that while we may be weak, as Hebrews 4:14-16 teaches, all of our strength lies in Jesus. PSam challenges us to recognize the idols in our lives, bring them to the light, and run to God, who is always ready to help us break free from the chains of idolatry and live fully in His will.
