Topos de Chile en La Guaira: “Es lo peor que hemos visto después de Haití”

The Chilean rescue team, Los Topos, is working tirelessly to find survivors after the earthquakes that struck Venezuela. In this interview, Francisco Lermanda, leader of the rescue team, recounts what they have found during their operations in La Guaira and explains why the magnitude of the damage has surprised them. The rescuer describes the collapse of high-rise buildings, the difficulties in accessing the affected areas, and the conditions under which the 44 members of the team deployed in Venezuela are working. He also compares the situation to other major international emergencies, such as the 2010 Haiti earthquake. According to his observations on the ground, some structures exhibit serious construction deficiencies: concrete that can be crumbled by hand, beams made of weak materials, and striking differences in column reinforcement.
