This is the story of the greatest controversy that ever came over the Indianapolis and one that built slowly and then all at once in the late 1960s. Turbine powered cars first showed up at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 1955 and intermittently after. They were curious things that were largely mechanical sideshows. Then in 1967 Andy Granatelli and his brothers showed up with their revolutionary STP Turbo Car and dominated the race like no one ever had before yet lost when a $6.00 part failed with three laps to go. This touched off one of the most wild years in Indy history in 1968 and it carried over a couple more runnings after that.
