Engineer Abdi Sulayman is a pioneering leader and one of the earliest advisors who helped guide the formation of the Somali Society of Engineers (SSE). Through decades of mentorship, encouragement, and service, he has supported generations of Somali engineers, demonstrating his deep belief in the transformative power of engineering to strengthen and uplift Somali communities around the world. In this inspiring presentation, Engineer Abdi reflects on his experiences as an engineering student at City College of New York during the early 1980s, a time when very few Somali students were pursuing engineering degrees in the United States. He shares the challenges faced by those early pioneers, the importance of perseverance, and the critical role that professional organizations such as SSE play in fostering mentorship, opportunity, and community advancement.
