He ranks third in international A-match appearances in Japan's history, with 116 appearances, the most by a goalkeeper of all time. In the Miracle of Miami against Brazil, he saved 28 shots from legends like Ronaldo and Roberto Carlos, contributing significantly to a clean sheet. He served as the starting goalkeeper in Japan's first World Cup appearance in France in 1998, and saved a penalty kick against Croatia at the 2006 World Cup in Germany, becoming the 20th goalkeeper in history to save a penalty kick at a World Cup. Furthermore, his save to stop Juninho Pernambucano's mid-range shot in the first half of the match against Brazil at the same tournament was ranked 6th in the "2006 World Cup Top 10 Saves." In the J.League, he played for Yokohama F. Marinos, Jubilo Iwata, and FC Gifu, before retiring with SC Sagamihara.
