Nectarios, a parishioner of the Holy Theotokos of Iveron Russian Orthodox Church in Honolulu, Hawaii. The first icon is a mounted-print copy of the Montreal Myrrh-Streaming Iveron Icon, gifted to Nectarios in 1997, and the second is a hand-painted Byzantine-style crucifix from Mount Athos. Fr. Nectarios and his wife first noticed a faint scent of roses and a small bead of liquid on the crucifix icon in mid-2007 but did not initially share the discovery. In late September and early October, the scent of myrrh became overwhelming, and visible streaming of myrrh from both icons intensified. Fr. Nectarios, initially hesitant, eventually reported the phenomenon to his parish priest, Fr. Anatole Lyovin, who confirmed the miracle and instructed that the icons be brought to the church. The icons continued to stream myrrh, sometimes heavily, sometimes stopping, but always emitting a strong fragrance. The phenomenon was revealed to the congregation on October 14, 2007, the Feast of the Protection of the Mother of God. Many people of different faiths came to witness the miracle, experiencing a deep sense of divine grace. One notable event was the unexplained healing of Fr. Nectarios' sister's pancreas after prayers were offered before the icons. Reflecting on the event, Fr. Nectarios sees the miracle as a sign of God’s presence and the Mother of God’s care for their small, struggling Orthodox community in Hawaii. Despite the hardships of maintaining their parish, he believes this event reassures them that they are not forgotten. The “Hawaiian” Myrrh-Streaming Iveron Icon was officially recognized as miraculous by the Russian Orthodox Church in June 2008 and given permission to travel to churches and monasteries worldwide. Reader (now Priest) Nectarios was entrusted as its guardian. While the Holy Cross icon has ceased streaming myrrh continuously, it still emits a strong fragrance, offering comfort to the faithful in Hawaii. Since its recognition, the icon has visited over 1,000 churches across North America and beyond, including Europe and the Republic of Georgia, where over a million people venerated it in 2014. Numerous miracles, including healings from blindness, cancer, and paralysis, have been attributed to the Theotokos through the icon. The icon's presence brings an overwhelming sense of love and joy to those who encounter it. While its deeper purpose remains known only to God, it serves as a profound reminder of His love and grace.
