Then the Academy's finest physical specimen — a two-and-a-half-meter Vethkani prodigy who held four records and whose grandmother had a moon named after her — carried a thirty-one-kilo case two thousand meters up a gravity gradient, arrived at the top in triumph... and could not turn the wheel. His hands were gone. He'd spent them. Then the Academy's finest mind modeled the whole thing to three decimal places, executed his plan flawlessly for nineteen hundred and sixty meters, set the case down to rest exactly on schedule — and could never pick it up again. Then the heavy-worlders tried. Then the sprinters. Then everyone. Two thousand eight hundred attempts. The pass rate for the entire Coalition was a rounding error. Nobody thought to look at the second column of the board. The one that said: Terran Wing — 44 cadets, 41 passes. Nobody thought to look at the sixteen-year-old girl from a North Sea wind platform who'd been quietly doing the course on Tuesdays and Fridays because it was on the schedule, and who described her twentieth attempt as "rubbish." And then the coolant manifold blew, and the power died, and every drone and lifter and exo-frame in the spine locked out under six-hundred-year-old safety law — and the only way to save forty years of soil and the seed vault and the station itself was for somebody, unpowered, to walk two thousand one hundred and forty meters up a burning ramp with a thirty-two kilo kit on their back, and still have enough left in their hands to turn a seized wheel seven and a half times. The aliens didn't underestimate Earth's strength. They underestimated Earth's patience.
