On that day, the most anticipated video game of the year finally arrived: Super Mario Bros. 2*. The game looked very similar to the original and was brutally difficult in comparison. The game came about during a time of change for Nintendo in Japan and the beginning of its efforts in America. All of which shaped what the game became, with its effects still reverberating throughout the universe today. That journey began on September 13th, 1985, the debut of the first *Super Mario Bros. A game that its designer, Shigeru Miyamoto, referred to as an "Athletic Game." Taking the concept of a "Field Athletic Course," which experienced a boom in the late '70s and early '80s Japan. An "Athletic" was a large park where people of all ages tried their best to maneuver through moving platforms and high bridges suspended over water. The popularity of these "Athletics" went beyond video games. Not long after Super Mario Bros.*, the TV series *Takeshi's Castle joined in on the fun.
