K5LA HORNSHOW! Railfanning at Oakville GO/VIA | 07/12/2026

When I arrived, I noticed work being done on a second platform for Platform 1, and it looks like Platform 2 has been expanded. There’s no longer a fence blocking my view of Amtrak 64 yay, but the platform can currently only handle 8-car trains and isn’t finished yet. The first train, not seen arriving in the video but briefly shown departing, was GO 1012 with the usual MP40PH-3C and CEM Cab Car. At the same time, GO 1609 rolled in with another CEM Cab Car and an MP40PH; before leaving, the crew tried to get my attention by waving and briefly ringing the bell, so I waved back. Departing from Platform 2 instead of Platform 1, they gave two horn blasts. I think this might be the new ID for GO 1709. Next came GO Transit 1961 with an MP40PH-3C trailing and a rebuilt Series VII Cab Car 250 leading! GO 250 was originally built in 2007 as part of the Series VII Bombardier order being the last cab car built in that order and didn’t undergo a rebuild initially since it was relatively new. In 2017, it was converted into a commuter coach, but in 2022, GO 242-250 were sent to Thunder Bay for rebuilding. While many expected them to return as regular coaches, they came back as cab cars, each fitted with an RL K5LA horn after GO 249 and 246 set the trend. GO 250 re-entered service in mid-to-late April 2026. All cab cars from that order are now in service, though Cab Car 245 sports a black Metrolinx logo instead of the white one on the others. Big thanks to the crew of GO 1961 for four blasts of the RL K5LA—my first ever on GO Transit and on a refurbished cab car! After a year and seven months of trying, I finally got that K5LA horn. The next train after this was VIA 70, with P42DC 902 leading and 911 trailing at the rear. This was my first time catching P42DC 902 after trying to see it for a while (though I might have a video of it in VIA Rail’s TMC, as it was either 901 or 902). Big thanks to the crew for the K5CA-LS horn as it’s my first time hearing a K5CA horn on VIA since June 2023. The train was pulling eight LRC coaches and one Budd coach for a total of nine, tying my record from June 25th, 2026, which was only three weeks ago as of July 12th, 2026. I think the LRCs might make it into August, giving me another chance to see them in action in Toronto. In the video, you can also spot VIA 902’s paint chipping away, a sign it may be retired soon.
