Ashanti Kunene is a South African poet, writer, activist and former Stellenbosch University student leader involved in the #FeesMustFall revolutions of 2015/2016. This is a powerful talk in which she unpacks what she sees as the future of Africa and its youth. Ashanti Kunene is a postgraduate student at Stellenbosch University. Her research focuses on the nexus between knowledge, knowledge production, power, and black womxnhood; specifically looking at the systematic erasure of black African womxn from knowledge and knowledge production in academia and society using the 2015/2016 #FeesMustFall protests as a lens. She was Primaria of Metanoia during the 2015/2016 #FeesMustFall protests and an active member of the fallist collective at Stellenbosch University. During her time as an intern at the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation in the Sustained Dialogues programme, Ashanti has published articles with the Huffington Post, The Daily Maverick, and News24. She is an avid reader and writes poetry in her spare time. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
