A Gold Rush STARTING at Jupiter Creek

A Gold Rush STARTING at Jupiter Creek The Crystal Barista kicks off a South Australian rockhounding journey with a visit to Jupiter Creek Gold Diggings, one of the most important sites tied to South Australia’s periodic gold rushes. After a long drive from Melbourne and a stop in Hahndorf, we explore the shaded forest trails of the Jupiter Creek Gold Diggings, part of the historic Aunga Goldfields. Here, 19th-century miners once pulled tens of thousands of ounces of gold from quartz reefs and alluvial deposits. Today, we fossick responsibly through abandoned tailings, uncovering iron-stained quartz, hematite, galena, and traces of gold hidden in the rock. From bush trails and forgotten mine shafts to backyard gold panning and mineral testing, this episode shows the reality of modern fossicking at a historic Australian goldfield.
