In this poem, Fujiwara no Toshiyuki transforms that image into a meditation on longing. Unable to meet the one he loves in the waking world, he turns to dreams. Yet even there, he wonders if unseen eyes still stand in the way. The poem plays on the sound of yoru—"to approach" like the waves, and "night" when dreams appear. This subtle wordplay creates a world where love reaches outward but never quite arrives. What makes the poem timeless is its quiet frustration.
