BREAKING: Trump's Auto Tariff Cost America $5.6 Billion — So Washington Is Taxing Hockey Sticks | Buffett In April 2025, the Trump administration placed a 25% tariff on Canadian-built vehicles under Section 232. The goal was straightforward: make it expensive to build cars in Canada, and manufacturers would move that work to the United States. Canada retaliated four days later — but the design of Canada's counter-tariff is the part almost nobody examined. Ottawa placed a 25% duty on American-built vehicles, and then offered automakers relief from it. The relief was conditional. To qualify, a manufacturer had to maintain its production levels inside Canada. Washington's tariff pushed assembly work south. Canada's counter-tariff paid manufacturers to keep it north. Both instruments were aimed at the same factories, in opposite directions. Twelve months later, the White House published the results in its own fact sheet. American motor vehicle exports to Canada fell approximately 22 percent — about $5.6 billion. Canadian vehicle imports from Mexico, Japan, South Korea and Germany rose by roughly $2.9 billion over the same period. American alcohol exports to Canada collapsed by about 81 percent, or $582 million. On July 20, 2026, Trump signed three new proclamations under Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930 — one titled for motor vehicles, one for alcoholic beverages, one for dairy. Read the annexes and something becomes clear. Vehicles already covered by Section 232 are excluded from the motor vehicle proclamation. Auto parts are not included at all. And the alcohol proclamation reaches well past beverages into wooden tableware, coated paperboard, and hockey equipment.
