A reading from the prophecy of Hosea 14:2-10 This is what the Lord says: “Return, Israel, to the Lord your God, for you have stumbled because of your transgressions. Take your vows with you and return to the Lord. Say to him, ‘You take away all your transgressions; accept the covenant. We will repay you with our confession. Assyria will not save us; we will no longer ride on horses, nor will we call the work of our hands our God. In you the fatherless find compassion.’” “I will heal their waywardness and love them freely, for my anger has turned away from them. I will be like the dew to Israel; they will blossom like the lily and take root like the cedars of Lebanon. Their shoots will come forth, and their splendor will be like the olive tree, and their fragrance like that of Lebanon. ” Those who dwelt in his shade will return; they will revive like wheat, they will blossom like a vine, their renown will be like the wine of Lebanon. Ephraim, what have I to do with idols? I am the one who answers him and watches over him. I am like a verdant fir tree; your fruit comes from me.” Who is wise enough to understand these things, discerning enough to know them? For the ways of the Lord are right; the righteous walk in them, but the treacherous stumble in them. Today's Psalm Psalm 50:3-4, 8-9, 12-13, 14, 17 R/. My mouth will proclaim your praise Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. R/. You desire truth in the inmost place, and you teach me wisdom in my secret heart. Sprinkle me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. R/. Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me away from your presence, and do not take your Holy Spirit from me. R/. Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me. Open my lips, O Lord, and my mouth will declare your praise. R/. Gospel of the day A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew 10:16-23 At that time, Jesus said to his apostles: “Behold, I am sending you out as sheep among wolves; therefore be shrewd as serpents and innocent as doves. But beware of men, for they will hand you over to the courts, flog you in their synagogues, and bring you before governors and kings for my sake, as witnesses to them and to the Gentiles. When they arrest you, do not worry about what to say or how to say it. At that time you will be given what to say, for it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you. Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; children will rebel against their parents and have them put to death. You will be hated by everyone because of me, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved. When they persecute you in one town, flee to another. Truly I tell you, you will not finish going through all the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.”
