Castelo de Montalegre e os Povoadores Os povoadores que fundaram Montalegre tiveram uma grande tarefa em mãos, com desafios à mistura. Receberam carta de foral do Rei D. Afonso III em 1273. E ficaram obrigados a pagar à coroa portuguesa 3500 morabitinos repartidos em três prestações, a pagar no primeiro dia do mês de fevereiro, junho e outubro. Mas para perceber se pagar esta renda era difícil vamos saber mais sobre esta moeda. O morabitino foi a primeira moeda de ouro portuguesa, ou seja, a renda era paga com 3500 moedas de ouro. Com certeza exigiu esforço destes povoadores de Montalegre pagar esta quantia. Mas as dificuldades não ficavam por aqui. Atualmente, a fronteira espanhola situa-se a pouco mais de 6 km, em linha reta. Estes povoadores viviam perto do invasor. E de fato, devido ao posterior conflito entre o Rei de Portugal e o Rei de Castela, para Montalegre e a Terra do Barroso significou ruína com povoados queimados e roubados. Mas apesar das dificuldades estes povoadores continuaram em frente e deste tempo medieval, temos belamente preservado este castelo. O castelo de Montalegre é classificado como Monumento Nacional desde 1910. No interior da praça de armas do castelo podemos ver a cisterna, uma estrutura de planta quadrangular, bastante profunda, parecida com um poço, com uma escada de acesso que desce até ao nível da água. Nos tempos medievais também existiam outras construções no pátio do castelo. A torre de menagem é de estilo gótico, com 27 metros de altura, tendo a entrada no primeiro andar a partir de um passadiço de pedra, que ainda se preserva. A torre de menagem é diferente pois não se encontra isolada no centro do pátio do castelo, mas está junta à face exterior da muralha, na zona voltada a norte, onde não existia um torreão a defender o castelo. O castelo de Montalegre integra-se na segunda linha de defesa da fronteira Norte. O castelo pode ser visitado gratuitamente, tem um bom parque de estacionamento e da torre de menagem temos uma impressionante vista. Montalegre Castle and the Settlers The settlers who founded Montalegre had a big task on their hands, with challenges mixed in. They received a charter from King Afonso III in 1273. They were obliged to pay the Portuguese crown 3,500 morabitinos in three instalments, payable on the first day of February, June and October. But to understand if paying this rent was difficult, let's learn more about this currency. The morabitino was the first Portuguese gold coin, meaning that the rent was paid with 3,500 gold coins. It certainly required effort from these settlers of Montalegre to pay this amount. But the difficulties did not stop there. Today, the Spanish border is just over 6 kilometres away as the crow flies. These settlers lived close to the invader. And indeed, due to the subsequent conflict between the King of Portugal and the King of Castile, for Montalegre and the Terra do Barroso it meant ruin with villages burnt and robbed. But despite the difficulties these settlers continued onwards and from this medieval time, we have beautifully preserved this castle. The castle of Montalegre has been classified as a National Monument since 1910. Inside the castle's square of arms we can see the cistern, a quadrangular structure, quite deep, similar to a well, with an access ladder that descends to the water level. In medieval times there were also other buildings in the castle courtyard. The keep is in the Gothic style, 27 metres high, with the entrance to the first floor from a stone walkway, which is still preserved. The keep is different in that it is not isolated in the centre of the castle courtyard, but is joined to the outside of the wall, in the area facing north, where there was no turret to defend the castle. The castle of Montalegre is part of the second line of defence of the northern border.
